While conducting a combat operation in Afghanistan on Sept. 16, 2008, Chief Warrant Officer Romulo “Romy” Camargo sustained a gunshot wound that paralyzed him from the neck down. The surgeries and rehabilitation that followed the next seven years laid the groundwork for the STAY IN STEP (SIS), a veteran-founded and -operated Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center co-created by Romy and his wife Gaby. SIS is not only a neighboring association in Tampa Bay, FL, it is a highly sought after incomparable rehabilitation center that provides innovative and cutting-edge therapies to help those with spinal cord injuries achieve greater mobility, independence, and a better quality of life. According to a 2016 report by the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, approximately 30% of persons with spinal cord injuries are re-hospitalized one or more times during any given year following injury.
