While conducting a combat operation in Afghanistan on Sept. 16, 2008, Chief Warrant Officer Romulo “Romy” Camargo sustained a gunshot wound that paralyzed him from the neck down. The surgeries and rehabilitation that followed the next seven years laid the groundwork for the STAY IN STEP (SIS), a veteran-founded and -operated Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center co-created by Romy and his wife Gaby.
